Phila Enacts Cell Phone Ban that Includes Bicyclists and Skateboarders

Thursday, April 30th, 2009 at 5:57 pm - by Matt Campbell. Filed under: Transportation.

The City of Philadelphia has just enacted one of the most expansive cell phone bans in the nation. The bill signed into law by Mayor Michael Nutter this afternoon makes it illegal to use a hand-held phone while driving a car, riding a bike, and even coasting on a skateboard.

Hands-free cell phone use will still be permitted. If caught using a cell phone while operating a vehicle, citizens will be fined $150, which will be reduced to $75 if paid within 10 days.

Enforcement of the cell phone ban will begin November 1, 2009. For the next six months, the City will educate drivers about the new restrictions.

    Here here!
I know this ban stinks from a convenience point of view, but as a cyclist in the city who has nearly been smashed by drivers who were on the phone (way more than once!!) I am wholly relieved to see sensible decision-making coming down from City Hall. This is positive progress for driver safety in the city, especially for cyclists and pedestrians!
