Bill Green Wants Bicyclists to Hang-up the Phone

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009 at 4:16 pm - by Matt Campbell. Filed under: Transportation.

Philadelphia City Councilman Bill Green says bicyclists and skateboarders need to be covered under his cell phone ban because they endanger themselves and others when gabbing on phone.

Green, the co-author of the ban, said this morning on WHYY that “I think they are as much a danger to others, as they are to themselves.” He gave the example of a woman who was walking on Kelly Drive and was hit by a bicyclist who was talking on a cell phone.

He also said it could be even more important for bicyclists and skateboarders to be paying attention because if they get hit by a car they could suffer serious injuries.

If you’d like to hear the full interview, here’s the Mp3

Has anyone seen a bicyclist or skateboarder using a hand-held cell phone? Should pedestrians walking across city streets be included in this ban?

I have seen bicyclists on the phone before, and it astounds me. I ride a bike in Philly every day, and it’s a harrowing experience. I prefer to keep both hands on the handle bars, thank you.
