Eagles team owner among Forbes’ list of newest billionaires

Thursday, March 12th, 2009 at 3:38 pm - by Matt Campbell. Filed under: Community.

Eagles version of Mr Potato Head

The Eagles' version of Mr. Potato Head is part of the team's lucrative lineup of licensed merchandise.

Brother can you spare a dime? Jeff Lurie, the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, is listed among Forbes magazine’s latest list of the world’s billionaires. Forbes reports Lurie’s net worth as $1 billion.

This is either great news that Philadelphia is home to one of the world’s newest billionaires or a depressing reminder that his NFL team won’t pay its back rent.

The one thing that every group at last month’s budget workshops agreed upon was that the Eagles team should pay up on the $8 million that the city says it is owed for stadium related costs.

I wonder how the ACORN folks are handling this news. Last week, they held a noisy protest outside of Lurie’s home in Lower Merion, Pa., chanting, “Show me the money!”

We want your thoughts about this. It’s clear that Mr. Lurie is a man of means, but should this fact have any bearing on whether the Eagles franchise (which disputes the city’s claim) should pay the $8 million?

It’s incredulous that a person who is a confirmed billionaire could stick it to a city that he calls home for his main source of income.

Why didn’t Nutter protest outside of Lurie’s house like he did the three lawyers?
