By Jason Kleinman
Seth Williams isn’t acting like a candidate who just got kicked off the ballot for the Democratic primary race for District Attorney. This morning, he joined the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity in a press conference, as they endorsed him as their pick for the city’s next DA.

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 at 2:52 pm - by Dan Pohlig

We’ve already heard that Philadelphia didn’t capitalize on the wave immigration that helped revitalized and grow population in other “more successful” cities nationwide, but now I’m wondering if we’re also missing out on the newest indicator of success, which was noticed by a blogger at The 13th Floor on a recent trip to Baltimore:

I awoke [...]

Tina Trenkner at The 13th Floor (a great blog for policy wonks and followers of “best” practices nationwide) found this humorous - or horrifying depending on your perspective - plan by several cities to deal with some minor infrastructure repair.
Fast-food chain KFC is offering to fix four cities’ pothole problems in a public-private partnership designed [...]

Video  by Monica Sellecchia
The City of Philadelphia needs to reduce its spending and/or raise taxes by $1.4 billion over the next five years. This is because the global recession has slowed business activity so much, that future tax revenues are expected to come in much lower than expected.
Earlier this month, Mayor Michael Nutter proposed a [...]

Stephen Colbert got the highest number of votes in a NASA Space Station module naming contest. Now U.S. Congressman Chaka Fattah wants to ensure that there is “Democracy in Orbit” and is pressuring the space agency to go with the people’s choice. Here’s part of what Fattah released last week in a statement.

Seth Williams, the highest profile candidate in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s race, has been booted from the May primary ballot. KYW 1060 reports this morning that Common Pleas court Judge Allan Tereshko is out of the race because the democratic D.A. candidate failed to report more than $10,000 he recieved from his campaign committee as [...]

The non-profit organization that was a central focus in the recent trial of former Democratic State senator Vince Fumo has announced that on April 30 it will end “community service functions.” If you go to the website for Citizens’ Alliance for Better Neighborhoods you find this message.
While this decision was painful, our Board has concluded [...]

The casino developers behind SugarHouse Casino finally got the foundation permit that they wanted. The permit was part of the casino’s recent complaint to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that the City of Philadelphia was moving too slow in the approval process. Earlier this week, the high court agreed with SugarHouse and approved its request for [...]

Friday, March 27th, 2009 at 12:45 pm - by Matt Campbell

On March 24, 2009, It’s Our City began an outreach campaign to every member of the Philadelphia City Council asking for them to share with us their thoughts about the budget. The questions are pretty straight-forward.
Do you largely support the mayor’s budget?
If you do not, what areas do you see as problematic?
What alternatives do you [...]

The Philadelphia City Council held its first budget hearings yesterday and it was not a pleasant event for the mayor’s staff. The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Patrick Kerkstra reports council appeared concerned over Mayor Michael Nutter’s choice of tax hikes.
The Nutter administration has proposed a temporary increase in the property and sales taxes, arguing that raising the [...]
