Woke up this morning to the awful news that a 25-year-old police officer, John Pawlowski was shot and killed last night near Broad and Olney. He and a partner were responding to a call from a cab driver who was being threatened by an armed man. When the two officers told the man to remove his hands from his pockets, he fired a shot through his coat and then fired several more. Pawlowski’s partner returned fire and critically wounded the suspect.

Pawlowski was the seventh Philadelphia police officer to be killed in the line of duty since May 2006. Your thoughts and comments are welcome but I hope that as a community we can come together to discuss solutions without falling into the trap of indulging our basest fears and prejudices. Is there anything that you and I, and the community, can do to end this?

it’s a sin and a shame the way people hang around at broad and olney and other stores on broad, when they should either be at home or on their way somewhere. it cause fighting and confusion when people are just hanging around idle with nothing worth while to do. hopefully soon the police will put an end to people hanging around broad and olney.
