Mayor Michael Nutter announced a three year fund raising campaign this afternoon that could lead to more city pools being open this summer.
Before today, only 12 of the city’s more than 80 pools were scheduled to open for the Summer. That’s because in November the mayor announced budget cuts in many departments to close a projected budget gap.
The campaign is called “Splash & Summer Fund” has already received $170,000. The city says if it can raise a total of $600,000 by March 1st that would be enough money to keep 30 pools operating this summer three days a week.
If the campaign really takes off, and donations hit $1.25 million by March 6th it could keep the 30 pools open six days a week.
The campaign hopes to receive donations of $10 or more through its website or by folks calling 215-665-2542.
What do you think of this idea? Should we try this with the libraries? Are you likely to donate?

Keep the Barnes in Merion saving multi millions in public and private funds. Use some of that savings to keep the pools and libraries open. What is more important than our children?
