Mayor to Announce Fund Raising Effort to Keep More City Pools Open

Does the city have a plan to fund more swimming pools?

The city has a plan to fund more swimming pools?

We just got an advisory from the Mayor’s Office in Philadelphia that at 12:30pm this afternoon the Mayor will announce details of a multi-year campaign to keep more of the Rec Dept’s swimming pools open.

As you may remember, in November Mayor Michael Nutter announced that the city would cut funding for 68 pools to save money. He got some grief over this at the eight town hall budget meetings as some citizens pointed out that swimming pools give kids something positive to do in the summer.

The list of attendees at today’s news announcement suggests some additional money has already been found. Scheduled to be there are representatives from TD Bank, Ameri-choice, Clear Channel, Oral Health Impact Group, TastyKake Company and former mayor candidate Tom Knox. We’ll keep you posted.
