How Phila can save $600 million dollars without eliminating programs

Friday, January 23rd, 2009 at 8:22 pm - by Matt Campbell. Filed under: Budget.

Beginning on Monday morning, It’s Our City will feature a series of stories by veteran political writer Tom Ferrick on where a lot of money could be found. This will be a serious look at everything from the money that is owed to the city to how the city could restructure the benefits package of its workforce. The series reads much like a survival guide where the choices are not pretty, lose the limb or lose your life. The $600 million dollars in savings that Ferrick describes would be created over five years. I invite you to visit our website each weekday morning when we’ll have a new Tom Ferrick story on where the money is.

Also plan to be a part of the solution by joining us at one of the four community budget workshops being held by the Penn Project for Civic Engagement. These workshops will give you a close up look at the specific type of cuts the city is considering and it will add credibility to your voice when a final report is written up and submitted to the mayor’s office. The dates and locations for the budget forums are here.
