SEPTA to offer “quiet cars”

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009 at 5:27 pm - by Dan Pohlig. Filed under: Uncategorized.

My one word reaction to this idea: AWESOME!  Please extend to buses, trolleys, the El and the Subway.

Inquirer story:

SEPTA will offer a “quiet car” on the R5-Lansdale/Doylestown line starting next week, with plans to follow suit on other rail lines in March, if passengers like the pilot program.

Starting Monday, cell-phone use will be prohibited on the first car of the morning and on evening rush-hour express trains on the R5 line. Passengers on the car will also be asked to use headsets with any electronic devices and to keep conversations quiet.

The best part?  Apparently enforcement of the rule will be left up to the passengers in what SEPTA’s customer service guru euphemistically refers to as “self policing” and what I would call, “community beat down.”  For any avid SEPTA Watcher, including, presumably, SEPTA Watch, this can only lead to plenty of good material in the future.

If  this is successful, I’d say the “quality of life” meter has just risen by about 50 points… (or been raised to “Green” or insert arbitrary scoring method here.)
