Libraries WON’T get their day in Council

Friday, December 12th, 2008 at 9:27 pm - by Dan Pohlig. Filed under: Budget.

It’s Our Money’s Ben Waxman talked to Council President Anna Verna about her apparent denial of the rest of Council’s request for hearings on the library closures.  In response to his questions, Verna gives new meaning to the term “strong mayor system of government.”

“We in Council are completely powerless at this time,” said Verna. “It’s strictly up the Mayor. If we were to have public hearings from now until the first of January, it wouldn’t do anything. Let me reiterate: We on Council are powerless at this point in time. The Mayor will do what he has to do.”

Well played, Councilwoman Verna.  No. Wait.  Not well played at all, Councilwoman Verna.

In the meantime, citizens still have the options to get their own answers at next week’s town hall meetings.  Just remember, no follow up questions.
