Surviving the South Street Bridge Closure?

It’s only been four days since the South Street Bridge closed. But it already feels like eternity. The last two evenings, rush hour traffic leaving University City to get on the Schuylkill expressway or across the river to Center City has been horrendous. The back-ups along Chestnut Street and Market Street stretch from 29th street beyond 34th Street. With the South Street entrance to I-76 now closed, all that traffic is spilling over to these other streets, which already had inherent rush hour congestion. All you drivers and bicyclists out there- how are you managing? Good luck!

More than anything, I miss the left-lane on-ramp. It’s the kind of high pressure merger that allows you to take stock of how precious life is every time you survive.
Philly’s highways now officially take longer than the back roads. I wonder how many barrels of oil are wasted a year on 76 to idling traffic? That should be part of our Apollo-style energy plan … smart GPS with networking, staggering workplace start times, investment in mass transit, and a Portland-inspired bike infrastructure. Traffic takes an economic, environmental and emotional toll … we can do better!
