Clog blog says library supporters may try lawsuit to keep 11 branches open

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008 at 3:05 pm - by Matt Campbell. Filed under: Budget.

City Paper’s blog says that library supporters may file a lawsuit this week or next to try to block the City of Philadelhia from moving ahead with its plan to close 11 branch libraries. The planned closings are part of a city plan to reduce its spending by $108 million dollars over the next seven months. Tax revenues are coming in at a much lower level that expected.

Clog’s Issiah Thompson says the legal strategy may be a long shot and it will need City Council’s approval. He writes “The basis of the suit, I am told, will be the obscure, yet-untested City Council “Bill 226,” which says that “no City-owned capital facility shall be closed, abandoned, or allowed to go into disuse without specific approval therefor from City Council, by Ordinance.”
