Save the Libraries Rally Tonight

Monday, November 10th, 2008 at 2:35 pm - by Stephanie Marudas. Filed under: Uncategorized.

Tonight kicks off the first of many rallies to come around Mayor Michael Nutter’s plan to close 11 libraries. The proposed closures are part of the Mayor’s overall plan to plug a $1 billion budget hole projected over the next five years. Tonight’s rally will be held at the Fishtown Library, which is located at 1217 E. Montgomery Avenue. The start time is 6:30 pm. Check out the Friends of the Free Library website for more information about future rallies and if you want to get involved. Here’s the list of libraries that Nutter is planning to close: Durham, Eastwick, Fishtown, Fumo Family, Haddington, Holmesburg, Kingsessing, Logan, Ogontz, Queen Memorial, Wadsworth.

The library has created an online petition calling for all the libraries to be spared.

    I want to know :
    1. how much it costs to run each library that is on the closing list.
    2. What is the law regarding a Mayor’s rights to budget cuts versus citizens’ rights to services per taxation.
    3. Can we make the money to keep our libraries open through bake sales, dinner shows, etc.
    4. Why isn’t the money slated for CCP going to the libraries instead. The CCP money is a luxury, a nicety but not a necessity. ANd federal funds are available for education. Federal money is not available for the libraries and they are a necessity.
