A movie extra tells of an angry mob after today’s giant pinata busting open event delayed. Hugh E Dillon participated in two days of filming for a Carnival Cruise line commercial which involved the world’s largest pinata. The 61 foot tall pinata is sitting just of Broad st in South Philadelphia.

Large crowds gathered this afternoon after it was advertised that the pinata would be busted open with a wrecking ball. It never happened. Apparently organizers thought it was too dangerous.

The crowds waiting for candy to rain down from heaven were tired of waiting. As Dillon, explains that as movie extras were being driven out of the parking lot the crowds took their frustrations out on him and the other movie extras and shouted obscenities at them.

“Because we were asked to wear business attire and had suits on, Lou and I became targets of their wrath. They assumed that because we wore suits that we had something to do with the organizing of this event turned riot and wanted to know why we weren’t letting them in.”

The pinata which is stuffed with candy is still going to be cracked open but the timing of that is unlikely to be made public. Dillon says the extras were told to be ready for the big finale but they were dismissed.

“We waited for word of their decision. We were then informed that we were wrapped and that they would break the pinata when no one was around and that they would CGI us into the shot.”

I am still impressed by the size of the thing and how it was the perfect centerpiece to the best weekend in Philadelphia. I have a video for those that missed it:

I ran into someone that knows the PR for the Pinata, they say the new break date is next Sunday. They didn’t have a time. I went by it yesterday and it was still intact being guarded by 3 security guys.

Thanks for the update. I hope they use the wrecking ball as advertised.
