Economic spinoff of Phillies reaches local newspapers
Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 at 4:58 pm - by Dan Pohlig
Covers like this could have the paper flying off the shelves.
WHYY’s Bill Hangley just filed this story which will air on WHYY 91FM tomorrow:
The Phillies run to the World Series has already produced one local winner: the company that owns the city’s two largest daily newspapers. Officials at Philadelphia Media Holdings say daily sales are [...]

Inky: Vote for Obama (or maybe McCain)
Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 at 4:32 am - by Tom Ferrick
The Inquirer endorsed Barack Obama on Sunday. Sort of.
There was a dissenting opinion that ran below the main editorial that stated the case for John McCain. Insiders at the paper tell me that was added at the insistence of Brian Tierney, a life-long Republican who also happens to be the newspaper’s publisher.
It was an unusual [...]
Philadelphia is home to 2 of America’s “Greatest Places”
Monday, October 20th, 2008 at 3:44 pm - by Dan Pohlig
The economy is in the tank. A presidential campaign rages on, rapidly bringing the political discourse down to the lowest common denominator. Nationwide, the housing crisis continues to erode billions of dollars of wealth as housing prices continue to plunge.
But in around here, everything is coming up Philly. The Phillies, of course, are set to [...]
Local races flying under the radar
Monday, October 20th, 2008 at 3:10 pm - by Dan Pohlig
Hey, Philly.
You do know that when you walk into the voting booth on November 4th you’re not just going to see one big sheet of paper with the names “Barack Obama” and “John McCain” and buttons next to each of them, right?
Nope. There’s something called a “down ballot” that includes all of the local races [...]
Phillies’ return to the World Series stirs memories of 1980 & 1993
Monday, October 20th, 2008 at 2:29 pm - by Its Our City Staff
By Ed Cunningham
Ahh, 1980: Bill Green was Mayor of Philadelphia, and a young W. Wilson Goode was his Managing Director. Philadelphia was being referred to as “Filthydelphia,” with people’s and businesses’ penchant for littering the streets with trash. It was the end of the Carter era in Washington—a time of “stagflation,” a particularly nasty brew [...]
Jury selection to resume in Vince Fumo trial
Monday, October 20th, 2008 at 4:45 am - by Matt Campbell
The on-hold trial of Pennsylvania State Senator Vincent Fumo is scheduled to resume this morning in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia. The trial was put on hold after U.S. District Judge William H. Yohn Jr., had “recused” himself on September 29. The new judge is Ronald Buckwalter.
Federal prosecutors say the 65-year-old Fumo misused more than [...]
Video gem: Michael Nutter singing about Philly leadership in 1989
Sunday, October 19th, 2008 at 5:00 am - by Matt Campbell
Hey look what I found rummaging through YouTube. It’s Michael Nutter in 1989 singing in a Leadership Inc. rap song. Nutter served as a city councilman from 1992-2006 and was sworn in a Mayor of Philadelphia in January 2008. This is a must-see because Nutter and his friends are actually pretty good. The song was [...]
Voter fraud? Let’s look at the facts
Sunday, October 19th, 2008 at 1:16 am - by Tom Ferrick
Is there a scheme to engage in widespread voter fraud on Nov. 4 in Pennsylvania to steal the election from John McCain?
That is the claim made in a GOP suit filed Friday. The state party said that without court intervention the outcome of the election “may be determined by illegal ballots.” Allegations of vote stealing [...]
