Saturday City Council Meeting on Rezoning for Foxwoods

Friday, October 31st, 2008 at 11:29 am - by Stephanie Marudas. Filed under: Casinos.

Maybe you were planning to sleep in tomorrow morning after celebrating Halloween and the Phillies’ victory. But if you really want to let City Council know what you think about the proposed Foxwoods casino at The Gallery, you better set your alarm clock. Council is holding a meeting tomorrow at 10 am to get public input on an ordinance to rezone the area where the Gallery is located. It would change the zoning to allow for gambling.

Expect to hear testimony from members representing Asian Americans United. The group will make the case that the casino doesn’t belong on the edge of Chinatown, and call for Foxwoods to submit a proposal, and call on the city to conduct studies about the possible impact a casino sited there would have economically and socially. Other testimony expected to be given will come from Mayor Michael Nutter’s administration. Nutter supports locating Foxwoods at The Gallery and moving it away from the Delaware River waterfront in South Philadelphia.
