Chinatown to Councilman: No Casino !!!!!

Friday, October 10th, 2008 at 8:07 am - by Alan Tu. Filed under: Casinos.

Ouch! Philadelphia City Councilman Frank DiCicco got an earful from angry residents last night at a meeting to discuss a plan for a casino bordering Chinatown. Plan Philly, which has a complete write up and a video of the contentious gathering, reports that “the crowd did most of the talking. And chanting and yelling sometimes.”

Frank DiCicco, the city councilman who represents Chinatown got booed when he announced he would introduce zoning changes that would allow Foxwoods Casino to build its casino at The Gallery at Market East next to their neighborhood.

Foxwoods-Philadelphia President and Chief Operating Officer James Dougherty told the crowd of nearly 400 that Foxwoods was “here to listen” and that’s when he got booed too.

Foxwoods Casino is one of two planned slot parlors expected to be built in Philadelphia. Foxwoods/Gallery could open as early as December 2009 while Sugarhouse Casino on north Delaware Avenue hopes to open by fall of 2010.

It’s a shame Philly residents aren’t interested in this tremendous source of revenue, especially since the tax base has been depleted by so many of us who have been forced to move. We will just continue to enjoy the A.C. casinos and give NJ our money, then.
