Will Sarah Palin be booed in Philly?

Let’s take a look at the math. This week we got the latest voter registration numbers for Philadelphia. Yep, as expected (bad economy) The number of people signing up as democrats jumped 14% to nearly 855,000 in the past year, while the GOP’s ranks shrank by nearly 4 percent to about 145,000. OK, so the statistical chances of Sarah Palin getting booed are 6 to 1. I know, not every Flyers fan is from Philly, but you get my point and Flyer fans are not always nice to out-of-towners.
So Sarah Palin will drop the ceremonial first puck this Saturday at the Flyers’ regular-season opener at the Wachovia Center. As America’s official “hockey mom” I understand this PR stunt, for both the Flyers and for the Republican ticket, but we’re less than 4-weeks away from the November 4th election. Do we have to inject politics into family fun night? I suspect Flyers fans, will believe its there civic duty, to let her know thanks, but no thanks.
In other civic engagement news: Game 1, Tonight: 8:22. That’s what I love about this town, everybody knows what I”m talking about. OK, maybe not everyone. But The Philadelphia Phillies begin a best of seven
game series against the L.A. Dodgers. The winner of this series goes to the World Series. I bring this up, because I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what civic engagement means. Voting that counts, serving on your school board that’s good, but I’ve realized I’ve overlook some of the most die hard activists, Philadelphia’s sports fans. Talk about civic boosters, The easiest way to spot a fellow Philadelphian in Las Vegas is the Eagles Jersey. So It’s Our City salutes The Philadelphia Sports Fan as our Citizen of the Week. Also, this study by Tufts University seems to back me up on this idea of the fan being a good citizen.
One more thing, I think the Philly Phanatic (the ultimate civic engagement cheerleader) has a twin. I don’t know if he/she is aware of this sibling. If you don’t believe me, check out the picture of Slyly on WHYY’s newest blog “Unobstructed View.” It’s Philadelphia’s newest sports blog.
It's Our City is a project that uses TV, Radio and Web
to promote civic engagement in the Philadelphia region.

I’ve been wondering how well Palin could catch a hockey puck in her teeth ……. mid-flight, of course. Hockey mom or not, it’s her risk to take.
Thanks for this post - I needed to laugh today

Believe it or not some of us who are Flyers fans are ALSO Republicans. I am thrilled that Ed Snider is doing this. Hopefully the fans who might boo will think twice about the lack of class they will display.

Boo her? She’ll be lucky if she doesn’t get pelted with a barrage of hot dogs and beer cups.
What part of the Main Line are you from? This is Philly! We have no calss and we’re proud of it!

Would it be totally inappropriate to hope someone drives a Zamboni over her? (yeah, ok probably, but a girl can dream)

The last time she was time she was in South Philly, she agreed with Obama on Pakistan and somebody booed her in a cheese shop. I know this is a hockey mom gimmick but some times these “photo ops” turn into “photo opps.” Sarah, you have been warned.

This would play better in Pittsburgh. Or was Snider the only PA/FL/OH/NC owner receptive to Palin? I find that hard to believe

She would be booed! There is not any doubt in my mind.

I a) want to boo her and b) don’t think we should cause it makes us look bad.
October 9th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
i think we should boo her to show ed snider that we disapprove of him using our sport as a political stunt.

You are all a bunch of jealous sickos.
Most of the voter registrations are Democrat fraud anyway…
Sarah’s great and will be the first woman in the White House a true feminist.
your guy has too much criminal baggage and crimes against humanity and racism.

(It’s Our City deleted the writers use of a certain C word)

Hey did you see this awesome Politico article?

They should boo her as she enters the ice, and when she leaves we should all chant…
“Show us your tits! Show us your tits!”

Pete, that’s just not classy.
October 12th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Just another showing of the classless Philadelphia fans. So much for “city of brotherly love”, guess we need to add only if you’re cool like the celebrity democrats. Fans in Philly live up to their reputation as just being the worst in the world.
BTW, no one knows who someone voted for once the curtain is pulled shut.
Question: why did the editors state that they deleted a certain C word. Like we don’t know what that means? Expletive deleted wouldn’t have sufficed? Or just possibly remove the post altogether stating that is was removed due to classless fan?
October 13th, 2008 at 7:34 am
JK, you’re 100% right … except if you read back you will notice that the majority of comments here are classless and would have to be removed (ie, driving a Zamboni over her, mooning her). And Wall Berliner I am originally from South Philly, not the Main Line, but fortunately you can choose to have class regardless of your life circumstances.
