Environmentalists plan to do some “street landscaping” tomorrow in Philadelphia

Activists nationwide on Friday will use metered parking spots to stage a little street theater. It’s called National Park(ing) Day. The idea is for folks to convert their little piece of asphalt into something that resembles green open space. Here’s what some folks did last year.
Through Twitter, I found a Philadelphia group that will be participating tomorrow. Temple University’s Information Technology Society Research Group will be converting a few metered parking spots in front of their office at 1601North Broad Street. Michele Masucci, the director of ITSRG, says she’s participating because she wants citizens to imagine how more green space could look in the inner-city. With that seed planted, she hopes citizens will one day work together to convert abandoned lots or brownfields into park space. To make sure her message gets out beyond Broad Street, she’ll be live blogging from her mini park on Broad Street.
