Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has come a long way from his wonkish council days. Last week before a packed audience at South Philadelphia High School, Nutter literally became a tutor for parents laying down the rules of optimum bedtimes. For teens, he says, they should be in bed at 9:30pm not 11:30pm and that it’s time parents take responsibility for managing their children’s educational careers. I suspect for man parents in the auditorium that night it was about time someone with a bully pulpit to say what they’ve been thinking. It was Nutter the Dad we were hearing.

The remaining two-thirds of the speech are dedicated to the things Nutter plans to do to achieve his two major goals on education. 1-Reduce the dropout rate. 2- Increase the college graduation rate among Philadelphians. He is calling upon everyone in the city do help out. Parents, teachers, business owners, you name it. Nutter says it’s improving Philadelphia’s education system is the foundation for everything else the city hopes to achieve.

Although many articles have already been written in the newspapers on his speech, I thought since this was an important speech, it would be good if everyone had access to hearing it. So I’ve uploaded a video of the speech. You’ll notice it’s not very high-quality that’s because it was a hour long speech and not-everyone has broadband so I opted for a smaller video file for faster loading times.

Click here to listen to an MP3 file of Nutter’s education speech.

Keep a copy for yourself: Once the file is playing you can save a copy on your computer by going to the “file menu” and choosing “save as” and setting the destination as your desktop.

To Maverickmama: Sorry it took so long for me to post the video and the mp3 of nutter’s education speech. I’m still on the learning curve with Final Cut video editing software. I thought it would be easy to just load one-hour of video and trim it and upload it. It took a lot longer. Let me know if there are other public speeches that are important to you and if possible i’ll try to put more videos online in the future.
