Public Debate #1: Should a casino be built at the Gallery Mall?

Friday, September 12th, 2008 at 4:55 pm - by Alan Tu. Filed under: Casinos, Quality of Life.

This past week, Foxwoods Casino announced that it’s willing to build a casino at a new location. The original site in South Philadelphia along the Delaware River ignited strong community opposition. The new location was celebrated by Pennsylvania’s Governor as not only a faster way to get the revenue generating operation but it will also be an economic boost to the Market Street corridor. It’s Our City’s interns Amiekay Richcrick and Andrew Forgotch went out to The Gallery to ask folks whether they like the idea of a casino being built at that location.

We also want to know what you think. Do you think a casino above The Gallery at 10th and Market st is a good idea?

Let them build it. They’ll stay here instead of Atlantic City.

I recently asked Casino-Free Philadelphia if they oppose the new location. The spokeswoman said yes because the casino is still too close to a residential community. My question to Casino-Free is…by law Phila will have two casinos the question where to put them, are there any locations that Casino-Free would find non-objectionable? Or as their name would suggest they are true to their name and they don’t want a casino at anytime in anyplace. If that’s the case, your organization loses credibility in this public debate over Sugarhouse and Foxwoods because there will be two casinos built, and Mayor Michael Nutter acknowledges this, it’s just a matter of doing the least harm and potentially using casinos to give an economic boost. So far The Gallery seems like a good spot for a casino, because it is near a major train station and it is near the Convention Center where out of state visitors will be looking for places to spend their money. Does anyone agree with me that given the fact that there will be two casinos in Philly, The Gallery seems like good spot?
