Hal Wheeler of the development firm ARCWheeler says he plans to buy the historic theater and keep intact its its original art deco design. The deal is not final and Wheeler says he wants the state to put up half of the estimated $30-million dollars needed for the renovation.
If the deal goes through, Wheeler plans to build a 30-story hotel to the west of it and use the theater for live performances and movies. The Boyd was built in 1928 and remains the last surviving major motion picture palace in Philadelphia and was listed this year by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America’s most endangered historic places. Last Month the Philadelphia Historical Commission designed the exteriod of the theater as a historic landmark.
