Mayor Nutter to Make Fugitive Safe Surrender Announcement @ 230p

Monday, September 8th, 2008 at 8:30 am - by Matt Campbell. Filed under: Crime, Uncategorized.

Details are sketchy but the Mayor’s office says Michael Nutter will make an announcement this afternoon concerning the Fugitive Safe Surrender program. It will be at 230pm at True Gospel Tabernacle Church, 1606 Mifflin St. The program launched in Philadelphia in May uses area clergy to help turn in law breakers. At that time, city officials estimated that there were 68,000 people with outstanding warrants. That’s a lot of people who are wanted by Philly police. In May, Nutter said the goal of Safe Surrender was not to incarcerate all of them, but instead help minor offenders find job training or rehabilitation services. Today’s announcement likely will be an update on how the program is doing. But that is just a guess.
