Urban Issues Get The Short Shrift Today at DNC

Monday, August 25th, 2008 at 6:57 am - by Matt Campbell. Filed under: Politics.

U.S. Conference of Mayors President Miami Mayor Manny Diaz will call for more federal investment in cities during his non-prime time spot at 7pm eastern.

The mayors are currently drafting a 10-point plan they want the next president to address within his first 100 days in office. You can see the plan on their website. It calls for everything from more federal dollars for ex-offender re-entry programs, ending unfunded mandates to creating a cabinet level Secretary for Arts and Tourism.

At 2pm eastern, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is scheduled to address the U.S. Conference of Mayors luncheon in Denver. The topic is expected to be crime. Nutter will be in the mile-high city until Friday for the DNC.

Also, one mayor getting a lot of attention this week is Narberth native John Hickenlooper. He’s currently serving his second term as Mayor of Denver.

Philadelphia Magazine talked to Hickenlooper shortly after his re-election in November 2007.

The US Conference of Mayors, in their 10-point plan for 2008, have declared their intention to ignore the historic DC V. HELLER ruling by the Supreme Court that guarantees our Second Amendment rights. My advice to the Conference would simply be not to rewrite the Second Amendment, but to reread it.
