 Internships are an important element in the growth of young professionals, and WHYY offers a variety of meaningful learning opportunities and on-the-job training experiences for junior- and senior-year undergraduates and graduate and postgraduate students (within two years of graduation). Experiences range from production and newsroom opportunities across all media platforms of the region's primary public media provider to branding, promotions and public relations and other administrative departments.
WHYY internships provide valuable and practical hands-on experience, supervised by award-winning professionals. College credit may be granted. Internships are unpaid.
Students will be selected through a competitive application and interview process for internships during three term periods: fall (September to December), winter-spring (January to May) and summer (June to August).

Students majoring in business, hospitality, marketing, or communications can gain experience in all aspects of event-planning and promotion. Interns assist in the creation and execution of events and assisting the Community Relations team in various administrative tasks. Candidates must have excellent verbal, written and organizational skills, the ability to take initiative and problem-solve, and be able to work some weekends.
The Content Production intern will assist in prep and production for You Bet Your Garden, nationally syndicated weekly call-in radio show offering tips on organic gardening, helping to develop the Arts Calendar web page and weekly listings, as well as any other support within FM content production. Strong written and communication skills, attention to detail, cordial phone manner, excellent computer skills.
Intern provides general support to Corporate Sponsorship Department. Helps update, assemble, and send out promotional and effectiveness materials to sponsorship representatives and sponsors; reviews underwriting credit affidavits. Additional responsibilities may also include various administrative tasks, as well as projects in the Development department, where intern will have opportunities to work in major gifts, foundation and grants, event management, and board relations. Other responsibilities include a variety of writing assignments, research, office organization, and database management.
Ideal candidate will be proficient with standard personal and office computing programs (knowledge of PowerPoint a plus), have the ability to perform tasks accurately under deadlines, and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and organizational skills. Candidate should be flexible, creative, and have the ability to manage projects independently. Interest in public media and fundraising preferred.
Educational Programs and Services encompass television and radio programming, community outreach, educational print materials, online services and special events. Interns have the opportunity to help create various platforms of media content, assist at various membership events, support educator and parent membership initiatives and guide students and members in the use of the Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons at WHYY.
Internships are available for students majoring in accounting or finance who have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Duties include updating financial schedules, preparing journal entries, reconciling bank statements, analyzing general ledger account balances and assisting other department members on special projects.
WHYY's monthly television arts magazine has openings for interns. Those working with Friday Arts would support the producers as they research, shoot and edit segments for the monthly broadcast and the expanding website. Those with experience using Final Cut Pro are especially welcome. Interns will assist in marking and annotating footage, editing shorts for the web, logging footage, acting as production assistants on location, and supporting the production with light organizational duties.
WHYY's Graphic Design Department has a very unique opportunity for someone interested in a future in Broadcast Design and Animation: intern will be a lead animator for a WHYY-TV Production, in addition to being given the opportunity to work on other in-house animation projects. Candidate must be competent in the use of AfterEffects CS4 and PhotoShop CS4, be a dependable self-starter, be able to work independently, as well as be open to constructive analysis. Intern will need to be willing to complete a test in AfterEffects CS4 as part of the interview process. Must submit a media sample with application.
Media Instructional Assistant internship offers the opportunity to participate in the production of a multi-media learning experience for Philadelphia high school students. Support WHYY's Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons staff with project coordination and instruction by serving as second instructor in a classroom of 10-15 high school students who are learning video production; keep records and provide case management for all enrolled students, and assist in lesson planning and implementation. Candidate must have completed coursework in journalism, education, social work, production, or related field; have experience working with video and/or with teens; and have excellent organization and communication skills. Some local travel is required; afternoon and weekend availability requested. (CBC and CAC required upon acceptance)
Students majoring in Human Resources, Psychology or Management, and who are in their junior year or later, have the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in human resources which will prepare them for jobs they will obtain out of college. Responsibilities include assisting staff with their administrative, recruitment, regulatory compliance, and benefits needs.
NewsWorks interns will assist in developing multimedia news and feature content for NewsWorks.org. Interns will cover community events, by text, photo and audio, and will work with NewsWorks staffers on reporting and multimedia projects. They will also be responsible for finding and inputting accurately community event listings, and performing other small reporting tasks for the site. Night work will likely be required. Excellent writing and computer skills required; experience in gathering field audio and video, and editing those media (e.g. ProTools, Final Cut Pro) is a plus.
This intern will work with NewsWorks news staffers responsible for social media and audience engagement to help extend the reach of NewsWorks content, foster engagement and build audience. Intern will work closely under the direction of staff on executing NewsWorks social media strategy. Previous familiarity with, and demonstrated responsibility in using, platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Digg a requirement. Strong writing and copy editing skills preferred; intern will work to get user generated content into shape for posting on the Sixth Square portion of the site.
NewsWorks interns will assist primarily with breaking news coverage, while also pursuing other stories as needed. Interns will assist reporters, interview sources, write scripts for on-air hosts, attend and cover news conferences, answer phone calls, set up interviews, and gather research material and sound for broadcast. Interns should have some familiarity with radio or television journalism, as well as with gathering field audio and editing audio (e.g. ProTools). Excellent writing and computer skills are required. Interns should also have the flexibility to do some night work (e.g. covering a community meeting).
Students majoring in marketing, communications or business administration can gain experience in taking a fairly new brand/product (NewsWorks.org, WHYY's online news site) and driving awareness and interaction with it among the target market. Responsibilities will include doing research about community events and organizations in specific Philadelphia neighborhoods, as well as recommending in which community events NewsWorks should participate, and how. The intern will be responsible for understanding what the participation requirements are and how they can be resourced with our current financial and human resources. The intern will be expected to attend these events, which are largely on weekends, and some evenings. Candidate must be high-energy, self-motivated, and have strong organizational and communications skills. Must drive and have access to a car.
NewsWorks web content intern would work under the direction of WHYY's senior web producer to post content to NewsWorks.org, as well as to develop content (graphics, maps, package displays, etc.). Some familiarly with HTML, CSS, WordPress, Flash highly recommended. Familiarity with Javascript, PHP and Perl a plus.
NewsWorks interns will assist primarily with community news coverage, and will also assist with the daily operations of the Wilmington news room, which includes contributions to NewsWorks.org and to WHYY's TV news magazine First. The position will entail research, writing, and scheduling interviews, so excellent writing, computer, and communication skills are required. Interns may also be given the opportunity to get out in the field with reporters, greet guests, run the teleprompter, and take notes on broadcasts, so some training in journalism is also essential. Interns should also have the flexibility to do some night work (e.g. covering a community meeting). Self-starters and students motivated to learn this business will succeed. Must have transportation to commute to Wilmington, Delaware.
On Canvas is a 30-min weekly music television show that introduces audiences to the ever mixing genres and styles of music that define the arts community of Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley region. The show is comprised of on-stage performance and backstage interviews with the featured artist. Previously featured artists include Andrew Bird, Melody Gardot, Rufus Wainwright, Ra Ra Riot, Terence Blanchard, and Janis Ian. We are looking for an individual who has basic knowledge in television production and experience using and creating interactive social media. This person should possess strong writing skills and previous experience working with and creating a presence on social networking outlets. This person should also have a passion and knowledge of music, music websites, and music venues in and around Philadelphia.
WHYY offers interns a great opportunity to diversify their writing skills, learn to write for different audiences, and build a solid portfolio of publications. Interns will assist the senior publicist with writing press releases and news stories for internal and external newsletters and messages for social media, organizing press clips, and other assignments. Strong writing, editing and organizational skills and an ability to meet deadlines are required. Students majoring in communications, public relations, marketing or journalism are preferred. A working knowledge of newswriting style is recommended. Applicants must submit three to five of their strongest writing samples, preferably in the form of press releases or news stories or both.
Radio Times is a live, two-hour daily news and information call-in show produced by WHYY. Interns assist with basic radio production duties and generate research on show topics. Show topics include local and national news and politics, foreign affairs, the economy, health and science, and arts and culture.
Each week, Dan Gottlieb PhD, is joined by guest experts and thoughtful callers, to discuss issues that affect individuals and society. The show covers the emotional and psychological implications of everything from children and religion to sexual abuse and the law, sibling relationships, hate groups and the impact of natural disasters. Interns would help in answering the phones during the show, identifying show ideas and finding guests. Ideal candidate will have an interest in public media, psychology, and mental health, and a propensity for research.
