This week on You Bet Your Garden®...
A lot of gardeners get a bit confused when looking for the right soil or soil amendments at the garden store. What do terms like mulch, compost, humus, topsoil and biosolids really mean? Mike McGrath will help you buy the right stuff with a loquacious lexicon of the language you may encounter on your Quest For Compost! He will also advise on where to use which type of "dirt." Plus: Local activists have put North Carolina on the leading edge of safe farming and gardening practices - but why does their organization have a brand new name? We'll hear from Fawn Pattison of Toxic Free North Carolina.

Read Mike's advice on compost at Garden's Alive.

Got a gardening or pest control problem? The solution has probably been delivered in depth on our show! Click here for the written versions at our archive of "Previous Questions of the Week"

Check here for more info on guests who have appeared on the show and scientific research Mike has reported on.

Find a "CSA" (Community Supported Agriculture) farm near you! (When you join a CSA, you purchase a 'share' at the beginning of the season and receive a batch of field-fresh goodies each week.) Here's a great USDA website that has links to SIX different farm lists, and a lot of good basic info on CSAs."

If you have problems with feral cats, contact Alley Cat Allies for resources and information.

NOTE: Please include your NAME and your LOCATION
in the email, and the actual SUBJECT (not "help" or "question") in the subject line.
Thanks!

Mike regularly crafts new adventures about a friendly Praying Mantis who protects a 'Paper Garden' at the Rodale Institute's "Kids Regeneration" site. Each story includes complete instructions on making a new 'creature' out of paper!: http://kidsregen.org/paperGarden/.
