The Face of Camden

Voices in the Family will give you another opportunity to listen to a program we did on Camden.
The City of Camden, New Jersey, recently filed for bankruptcy protection after Mayor Milton Milan declared his city financially insolvent. Camden has been struggling for decades; the community is faced with high unemployment and crime rates, the appearance of the city characterized by abandoned buildings. Despite Camden's history, there are citizens who haven't given up hope, and who work tirelessly to re-build their community. We'll be joined by Father Doyle of the Sacred Heart Church in Camden, who has been an active leader in the community since the late 1960's. We'll also explore the effects on poverty on a community and its members.

We have not heard much lately about "The War on Drugs" that our nation is fighting, but drugs are still waging war on our communities. After declining for years, teenage drug use, mostly of Marijuana has doubled since 1992. During this two-part special, Voices in the Family will portray the faces of addiction, we'll explore the effects of addiction on families, what treatments work, we'll investigate what prevention efforts have an impact, and discuss how parents can talk to their children about drugs.

Today, Voices in the Family will co-host a panel discussion with a live audience at the SGI USA community center in Philadelphia. Our guests on the panel will be young people who are addicted to drugs, we'll hear from their parents and counselors from local Substance Abuse Treatment centers like "The Bridge" in Philadelphia.
