Fundraiser show with Sonia Sanchez
Listen
via Real Audio Poetry is the Voice of the heart, but also the voice of a culture. And as
Dr. Sonia Sanchez' poetry of the sixties has shown, it can be the voice of
a generation.
Her poems lashed out against racial injustice and an anglo-centric
educational system. As an educator, Sanchez has been a supporter of
African American studies departments. But even as an activist and a strong
voice for racial and social justice, Sanchez has always remained deeply
personal in her poetry. Dr. Sonia Sanchez is the Laura Carnell professor
of English at Temple University, and the author of thirteen books, such as
her latest collection of poetry called "Like the Singing Coming off the
Drums."
Join Dr. Dan Gottlieb as he speaks with the internationally known poet
about her childhood, artistic influences, and the healing power of words.

All But My Life - The amazing story of Gerda Weissmann Klein
Gerda Weissmann Klein's life was changed forever when German troops
marched into her little town in September of 1939. Until then Bielitz had
been a peaceful place, where Germans and Polish people lived side by side
as neighbors. Gerda's beloved brother Arthur and her parents were living
in a nice house, her father was the owner of a fur company. But once the
swastika flags were hanging off every house, things changed rapidly for
Gerda. Being one of the Jewish families in town, Gerda's father lost the
company, the family lost the house, and was first forced to live in the
basement, then in a ghetto. Arthur was ordered to assemble with other
Jewish men, and disappeared into a work camp. Finally, Gerda and her
parents were forced to leave the ghetto, and were separated into different
camps. Gerda miraculously survived her stay in different work camps, and
even the "March of Death" in 1945. She was liberated by American soldiers.
Gerda is the only member of her family who survived the Holocaust. Today,
she is an internationally known lecturer and author of "All But My Life."
She joins us to share her amazing life story.
